Finger puppets or small toys? I find it hard to juggle keys and toys in an effort to get infants and toddlers to focus on my camera. If I place a birdie directly onto the camera, it gets them to "watch the birdie!"

... (and laughing, if they're a little older) ...
For the older kids, I like an assistant who's "making fun of" the photographer.
Everyone knows about the forefinger/middlefinger "V" for bunny-ears over an
unknowing subject. An assistant who does it to the *photographer* usually
gets some grins. Even more grins from an elaborate pantomime, with the
assistant picking up various things & winding up to go "POW" over the head
of the "unsuspecting" photographer... :-)
Note that littler kids may be scared by overly-outre / aggressive antics!
