Questions regarding a cactus wireless trigger and my D40

Hello all,
Own a D40 and love it. Recently was given a vivitar 285 HV flash and want to set it up off camera on a umbrella/lightstand. I have a cactus trigger but have not tried it yet on my D40. So my question is will it work w/out damaging camera or flash?
