I took pictures at (in) the SF pillow fight. Any advice for being a photographer in violent crowds (because it was too much fun to not do again)?

photographers being harrassed by police

This is a growing trend across the country, be aware:

Runnin' Scared
The NYPD Harasses a Photographer at Coney Island
www.villagevoice.com/news/08...5,2.html

-------------------------------------------
Runnin' Scared
The NYPD Harasses a Photographer at Coney Island
It's not the first case of illegal censorship by a department that says "shoot first, hand over film later"
by Sean Gardiner
June 10th, 2008 12:00 AM

Manhattan commercial photographer Simon Lund loves Coney Island so much that he treks out there 10 to 20 times each summer to take pictures. But it was only on his latest venture that Lund encountered something he'd never experienced in all his trips there over the years: an unwanted photo editor from the NYPD.

As if he were in a police state, Lund was intimidated by a cop into giving up his film, even though he was doing nothing wrong and wasn't formally accused of anything.

The upshot is that "the police had no right to get involved—none," says Todd Maisel, vice president of the New York Press Photographers Association.

Under the law, Lund was allowed to take a photo of anyone in public. If he intended to use the picture commercially, he'd have to get a signed release.

Maisel, a shooter for the Daily News, says news photogs get into occasional scrapes with police, but most know never to give up their film. However, he says he can see how a commercial photographer might be more easily intimidated by the NYPD.

NYPD officials declined to comment for this story, but several allegations of the cops' heavy-handed behavior toward photographers have been documented. The NYCLU has filed several lawsuits against the NYPD, accusing them of violating First Amendment rights in its harassment of photographers. One of the suits, Sharma v. NYPD, was filed in January 2006, when Indian filmmaker Rakesh Sharma, who was shooting taxis in midtown, was stopped by police and detained for several hours, during which he was quizzed about "terrorist" activities. That August, the suit was expanded at the NYCLU's request to include a slew of photographers.

"Photographers and filmmakers have been unlawfully detained, searched, and threatened with arrest if they would not disclose or destroy their film," the Sharma suit contends, adding that the harassment, ominously, doesn't always end there. "Photographers have also been subjected to a second round of questioning by members of the NYPD's Intelligence Division," the suit alleges.

The department also may be keeping close track of which photographers it harasses. The suit accuses the NYPD of maintaining a database that includes the identities of everyone "investigated for photography . . . regardless of the outcome of the investigation."

If that's the case, then Simon Lund is on the list.

His troubles started when he was with his wife, Jano, clicking away at Coney Island on Memorial Day. A woman approached him and accused him of taking pictures of her young son. Lund says that if he did, he was unaware of it; he recalls that he was shooting the rides. In any event, Lund knew that it's legal to take pictures of people, even kids, in public. (For later commercial use, photographers have to get releases from the children's parents.)

The woman told him to accompany her while she found a cop. She insisted that Lund erase the picture, but Lund was using a film camera, not a digital one, and thus couldn't erase individual shots. Nevertheless, he says, he willingly followed her over to a group of police officers congregating on the boardwalk. "I just wanted to sort it out, because I knew it was fine to take pictures in public," he says.

A cop whom Lund couldn't fully identify, however, didn't see it that way. Lund says the cop asked him and his wife if they had children. When they said no, the officer said: "If you did, you'd understand why she is so upset." The woman was joined by other family members, and soon they were all yelling at the police to make Lund hand over his film.

"It was starting to get uglier and uglier," says Lund. "The mother of the child was getting really hostile: 'Why isn't he destroying it? How can he take pictures of my child?' "

Lund says the cop then leaned over to him and said: "You should destroy your film right now, or give it to her. You've got to give up your film, or things are going to get much worse for you."

"I knew at that point I could fight it," says Lund. "I knew I was right." But he recalls that he didn't want to find out what the cop meant by things getting "much worse for you."

So he gave the film and a business card to a friend of the woman's. "The cop didn't exactly say, 'I'm going to take you to jail,' " says Lund, "but basically, he didn't leave me any other choice."

Lund asked that the woman develop the photos, remove any pictures of her son, and please return the rest of the photographs to him. He hasn't heard from her since. He says he plans to file a complaint with the Civilian Complaint Review Board.

"We're quite confident that the NYPD has told its police officers, in one way or another, that they should be paying very, very close attention to photographers," says Christopher Dunn, the NYCLU's associate legal director. "But they haven't been given clear directions on the limits in which they have to conduct those investigations. Police officers are not allowed to look at images without consent of the photographer, and they have no authority to order someone to let them look at their pictures or to confiscate their film. And it happens all the time."

Officials at the CCRB and the NYCLU say that complaints about the police approaching people taking pictures and either demanding to see their photos or seizing and destroying them have been on the rise ever since 9/11.

Dunn says this particular case offers the "wrinkle" of Lund willingly approaching the cops instead of the cops approaching him. "But the outcome is the same," he adds: "Someone's film is disappearing."

Couple of Questions

bear with me, I am an amateur at all this...

Just bought a memory stick with 2 GB of memory. So, say that allows me to take 900 pics or so on one memory card.

But how long does the battery, in a basic digital camera hold charge. I have a simple Sony Cybershot. How long will that battery last?

In other words, if I went outside to shoot some nature pictures, would the battery hold charge long enough to take a few hundred photos, say...over the course of a few hours?

Is that battery charge merely a timed based thing - based on how long the battery is on? or is it also based on camera use...on how many pictures are taken and other functions used?

so that is all one thing..

+++

then....

with digital photography, does the memory stick lose quality, over time.

That is to say, with repeated use do the images lose quality? Would say, storing a memory stick, say, for a few years, cause the images to lose quality?

thanks so much!
ISO bay area studio photographers

Hey all,

I am looking for opportunities to volunteer or assist some photographers who do their work in a studio. Thus far I've mainly shot events, weddings, performances and other 'on location' type gigs. I would love to gain some hands on experience on setting up for shoots in a studio. I'd like to work with a few different people so I can get more comfortable with different types of lighting & backdrop systems so I know more of what I want when I finally purchase my own.

If you are someone who does studio work in the bay area (ideally closer to SF or Oakland) and would be open to allowing me in to assist and learn, please let me know.

Thanks!

Shooting, Printing, Cropping

This topic kind of came up before but I wanted to open a new thread. I've looked at the following:

35mm film 24mm x 36mm Ratio: 1:1.5
D200 digital camera 8.64" x 12.907" Ratio 1:1.5

4x6 Ratio 1:1.5

But...
5x7 Ratio: 1:1.4
8x10 Ratio: 1:25
8x11 Ratio: 1:1.38
11x14 Ratio: 1:1.27

I'm really starting to question how I want to shoot. Because most clients don't want a 4x6 print. And sometimes they may want a 5x7 but they might also want an 8x10. Ideally I'd like to frame exactly how I'd like something printed without cropping.

How do you handle this dilemma?

18-200 vs. 80-200

My current lens kit is a Tamron 12-24, a Nikkor 50mm, and a Sigma 70-300.

I'm thinking of upgrading the long zoom lens.

The options I'm considering are the Nikkor 18-200 3.5-5.6 VR and the Nikkor 80-200 2.8.

The 18-200 is supposed to be a very good lens, it's portable, and I can leave it on the camera almost all of the time

The 80-200 2.8 though is supposed to be a great lens. But it's heavy, and I do lots of traveling.

Any advice? If I get the 18-200, will I just lust for the better sharpness of the 80-200?

Hi Folks..

Awhile ago, I passed this along...about a Tribe sister who's son Chris has been missing since September.

(Here is the website:http://www.findchris.org/)

There is some news! It is the first lead in the case!

"Today a girl working at a gas station in Cortez, CO says' she can positively identify Chris as a boy that has come in several time, most recently with 2-3 day, trying to buy cigarettes..."

Here's hoping that the good folks in law enforcement can take this lead and finally bring Chris home!

Please send out some good vibes and, if you could, pass this info along to anyone you know in Colorado
and especially in the Cortez area.

Here is a link to a map for Cortez, CO:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Cortez,+CO,+USA&sa=X&oi=map&ct=title

thanks,
Photography as Art

After 17 years as a commercial photographer I have decided that instead of complaining about the decline in photography as an art form I am going to do something about it. Beginning June 7 I will begin hosting experiential photography Treks in the SF bay area and throughout Northern California. The Treks will teach the art of mindfully designing a great photograph. For more information please visit
http://www.nccenterphotoarts.com.

Hope that you will join me - should be very informative, shared with good people and great fun.
Thanks... Glen

I've been invited to shoot publicity shots for a community theatre. Using only stage lighting (and no photographer's off-camera setup), what tips might anyone have for doing this kind of shooting? We can alter actual stage lighting to fit every need.

So i've got to think about my first photo equipment.....

Seems like i should come up with a game plan for my first major SLR purchase, which may be upcoming..........

This is so in its early stages that narrowing down the ACTUAL specific camera can indeed wait....

It is seeming as if i will have about $2500. to spend.....

I am 40 and now back at school- going for Graphic Design and Photography - and am no slouch behind the lens, although mostly self taught, and sparse on alot of the deeper pro-/tech savy stuff..... I CANNOT take my photography to the next level with my dingy(altho beloved) 4 Mgpl baby that has served me well as my first digcam for the past 5+ years..... i am starting to get people interested in having me shoot them, but need to bring up my quality output level SERIOUSLY....... I previously have done mostly city-scapes.., but want VERY much to start exploring nudes, portraits and fashion photography...

is it realistic to think i can get at least a 8-10 Mgpx Canon or Olympus, with a reg, comes-with-the-body-lens, at least one other lens (a wide angle maybe..? I say that as opposed to a huge ass zoom because portraits and interesting depth of field are more interesting to me than stuff that i'm thinking a mega-zoom would be good for...), and a pole and roll out 'background' paper set-up (what ARE they called, anyway...??) within that range...?

Whew- lol! Thanks in advance for ANY suggestions, things to avoid, or trusted sources.......

A few days ago I responded to a topic here named "photographing children, not yours" and I was just coming back here to see if other people had replied, but I can't find it anymore.

Google still has it cached: http://209.85.135.104/search?q=cache:GX8IPduMo-wJ:gophoto.tribe.net/+photographing+children,+not+yours+tribe&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=3&lr=lang_nl|lang_en|lang_es

But if I click on the link I get "The Topic you have requested was not found." This does not happen for the topic right underneath it in the Google cache so I do assume that it has been deleted. Is there some form of censorship going on here? If anyone knows why and how, I'd like to know.

NY Daily News Staff Photographer Harassed
NY Daily News photographer staff photographer Todd Maisel was stopped by Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority for attempting to take pictures from the bridge.

Here is Todd's account of events.

quote:
I work as staff photographer for the New York Daily News. I was just heading for home towards the end of shift when I got a call from the assignment desk that the Concorde, the supersonic airliner, was on a barge and heading under the Marine Parkway Bridge between Brooklyn and Queens. I had five minutes to get there.

I got to the bridge, pulled my car off to the side of the road and ran up the public walkway on the bridge. I knew the plane was coming because a news helicopter was following it. As I ran up the walkway, a Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority sergeant in a vehicle tried to flag me down. I had second to spare and kept running but veered off the walkway and towards the bottom of the bridge. He pulled his car over and I knew I had trouble coming. I got on the phone with TBTA Public Affairs Deputy Commissioner Frank Pasquale, but he and another cop were all over me and were already trying to stop me. I immediately told them I mean no disrespect, but the photo was about to occur. The bridge has a sign that says "Photography Prohibited," even though there seems to be no law on the books to that effect.

I said I was going onto park property instead, but they were going to stop me from shooting. Pasquale got on the phone and I put him on with the sergeant. As he talked, my photo came up. I started shooting and the other officer decided to try to stop me from getting the picture. I shot anyway, apologizing profusely, dodging him and saying this was my last chance.

The cops gave me permission to shoot in the end, but it was too late. If I hadn't pressed my luck and shot despite their objections, I'd have no photo. How can they possibly have the right to stop people from taking photos in public places, places of public access, and saying this is private property? A bridge private property? That is like saying the city streets are City property and therefore, are privately owned.

I have been obstructed by police two other times just in this past month and it must stop!

I wonder what the life expectancy of a digital camera is. All that electronics, resistors, transistors, processor and stuff. I guess about as long as a good TV set or AM FM receiver used under normal use. About 10 years. yes, no, maybe....

Every time I try to print using a roll I get a paper feed error. Has anyone else had this problem? Or found a solution? Epson was decidedly unhelpful, saying it was a common problem and to *force* the paper????

Lensbaby

A couple of months ago, I bought a Lensbaby....just to have a little fun.
I work with a 35mm SLR, but really love the "warped" focal planes achieved by photographers like Keith Carter....
one sweet spot of focus, and the rest just a soft , watery blur.
The only way I could try to experiment with this on my SLR ,was using a Lensbaby.
I know that one can do this with a view camera, but I don't have one.
I was fairly happy with the result in portraits of my daughter and son.....(posted on my profile photo album)
My Photo instructor thinks that are too "gimmicky"
He thinks that one is distracted by the technique., and that these photos will look "dated". As in "Oh, look, that was shot the year the Lensbaby came out.
Opinions anyone?

Photobucket & Copyright question(s)

NOTE: This was posted to Digital SLR, and I forgot to post it here. So I thought I would post it here, and get your thoughts too.
I have changed the thread, and questions a little, due to either missing facts, or the feedback I got from the Digital SLR group.

Background:
I currently manage quite a few (Non-commercial*) websites, and I have gone out searching the web for photo's or images (Drawn art) for backgrounds, and have often found these on "Photobucket.com".
NOTE: I have only used 1 drawing "without permission" to date, and am looking into changing it out as soon as possible.

My dilemma(s):
1. I have found photo's / image's on Photobucket, but I can not see a way to contact the content owner to:
a. Find out if it is their artwork
b. Ask for permission to use it

2. I have found an image by using "Google". I write the owner of the site, and they say "Sure, go ahead and use it (some add "I didn't take the photo, and don't remember where I got it from...")".

My Solution:
If I use any photo's or images from another website, I will post a link on the web site I am using it on linking to the site / page I got the image from. Therefore giving credit to whom I believe is the owner / creator.

Question(s):
1. Do any of you have any other suggestions on how to make sure I am giving appropriate credit, or things I might do so someone isn't saying I was not doing due diligence to find the creator?

2. Is it wrong for using these images on these non-commercial* sites?

*Non-commercial = Nothing is being sold, or it is a non-profit group (My definition for this thread.)

Final thought... A few people have suggested other sites, like Flicker, that have Creative Commons Licenses (http://creativecommons.org), and I am currently searching that site for a replacement to the one image I have (as some people put it) "Stolen".

i have photo printer ink issues

I am wasting a lot of ink and $$$ trying to get my printer back to printing photos.

I was low on one color, so I replaced it. The print came out awful. I tested ink supply and then
another ink went low. It's been a color merry-go-round on replacing ink. I cannot get it to balance out.
grrrrr
I have an Epson photo stylus R1800
and a mac laptop g4.
I need a house call. Is there a mistress or knight to help me out there?
I sure miss printing off my own photos.
I can pay something reasonable...yes, cash.

Thanks.

So...what are the cliches of photography? Those pictures that everyone takes, and so to stand out have to be *damn* good, and frequently aren't.

I have an account on Flickr where graphic designers and publishers find my pictures. I've been published 5 times. The most recent was for a cook book. When I'm contacted it's always a request for permission to use my pics. At that point, I say that it's alright and how I should be credited. Then I ask for a copy of the book, etc. Should I be asking for payment at this point? Would I blow my chances for exposure that way? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Models and Photographers: opinion needed, glamour photography

Photographers and Models,

I am writing a process analysis essay on the process of photographing models and getting the best out of your shoot. As a photographer, I have learned the most about shooting subjects by modeling for professional photographers who knew how to direct amateur models, and from professional models that teach the craft of modeling. Please offer any advice or info about your personal process. I can use all the input to put together a sequenced process of tips of the trade that will help and inspire both professional and amateur models and photographers alike!!

Professional Photographers:
What are the key directing points you use in making your models feel natural, comfortable, and at ease.
What are some recourses that have influenced you, that you think could help others?
Preferences? Tips? Posing? Attitude?

Professional and Amateur Models:
Can you describe some experiences with photographers that have made you feel comfortable or
otherwise?
What are some strategies you use in a shoot to produce the best product?
Resources? Advice? Posing? Attitude?

Thank you so very much! any input for sharing is greatly appreciated!
Shanna

Background kit for unlimited budget

One of my friends requested a list of background supplies for a studio, here is my starter kit recommendation for unlimited budget. What would you add?

-seamless paper

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=sort&A=search&Q=&sortDrop=Price%3A+Low+to+High&bl=&atl=&pn=1&st=categoryNavigation&mnp=0.0&mxp=0.0&sv=1395&shs=&ac=&fi=all&pn=1&ci=1395&cmpsrch=&cltp=&clsgr=

-Autopoles kit:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5218-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto_2984_Single_Roll_Background_Support.html

autopoles are not ideal for traveling, this is really designed for permanent setup.

-least expensive background stand kit:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/331728-REG/Interfit_Paterson_COR755_Background_Support_System_.html

this is good if you don't have enough space in your car and you plan to travel with this a lot.

-Pony clamps:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/283213-REG/Adjustable_Clamp_Company_3202HT_Pony_Spring_Clamp_.html

-super clamps:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/5166-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto_2915_2915_Super_Clamp_without.html

I like this the best:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/3575-REG/Avenger_C1575B_C1575B_Super_Clamp.html

this is the one from
matthews

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/139560-REG/Matthews_B540004_Super_Mafer_Clamp_.html

-C-Stand

You need two kits of these if you want to use them as a substitute background stand or studio stands by themselves:

or two of these rolling stands

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/3554-REG/Avenger_A420_A420_Wheeled_Light_Stand.html

or this:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/3549-REG/Avenger_A310_A310_Wheeled_Light_Stand.html

This is great for outdoor overhead frame for diffused lighting.

Who can name a id tag manufacturer who would make custom tags, name phone number on a key chain? I would like one locally here in NYC or online retailer. I find rental houses attach them to sand bags, cases etc, in order to quickly separate them from similar products owned by others, other than oneself on location. Any suggestions would be appreciated. These tags are plastic, about 3 inches and has a spring ring.

Anyone out there that is trying to take advantage of the wedding market but wouldn't admit it? I just started a new tribe called "Alternative Wedding Photography" dedicated to separating yourself from the traditional cheese ball industry standard and offering a more artistic, editorial style, approach to covering weddings. Check it out if your interested.

I started shooting small product and still life on glass with colored paper about 12 inches under my subject. Got some cool results. I just took a photo out of a big picture frame and propped it up with cinder blocks. If I can figure out how to post a photo on this site I'll give some examples.

This fall, I visited a one-building town on the far edge of Nevada and took a few snapshots. It had everything that you would want in a desert highway stop--grandma, kids, chickens, cafe, bar, gas, and mounted deer heads.

The pics are up on my Flickr page, http://flickr.com/photos/christinaweber, if you'd like to take a look.

Bush Admin Proposes Fees to Photograph National Parks

PHOTOGRAPHERS--STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS!

READ THIS:
Fees proposed for photographing public lands:
www.seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/...3.html

AND THEN READ THIS:

Photographers did nothing while, local and state beaches, and cities, decided
to write new ordinances that made photographers cash-cows to the government.
I suggest photographers do something now, before it's too late.

Problem:
Define "commercial". By letting local landmanagers be responsible for implementation and enforcement, there will
be mistakes, over-zelous rangers citing people when they probably shouldn’t–it happens. I liken this to what
happend at local state and city beaches, if the rangers or officers catch someone with a really nice camera they
will probably ask you to leave or cite you. They just can’t tell who is who when it comes to photography. With the
advent of cheap digital SLRs, just about everyone looks like a professional. What really sucks is the fees, they
will be straight across the board expensive, and have insurance requirements too. So wether you are a newbie
wanting to take a picture to sell a few postcards at the local gift shop or wanting to do stock photography (with
no guarantee of income), it will COST YOU…. Even if it’s personal, you will get hassled, because you look
“professional.”

The photo-journalist are worried about how it affects their news reporting of non-breaking news. I think that
freelance photographers and advanced hobbyists should be the ones really worrried–they are the biggest cash cow,
because there are more of them.

I would suggest everyone that has a camera voice out against permit requirements for photography. It simply does
not require the large crews that the film industry requires and all the strings attached to it. Photography permits
are just a cash cow to the government, and it’s time ALL photographers voice out against being victimized by our
government. We are NOT wallets to be tapped at whim. Some suggest we be taxed reasonably like fisherman or hunters.
But even that is soooo ridiculous, we are being taxed for photographing nature, without exhausting its resources.
It is a sad, sad day when we are nothing more than wallets to our government.

Voice out, you can write to the department of interior individually or as a group…
www.doi.gov/contact.html

DO SOMETHING…

Fact:
Anyone who enters a national park is already paying an entrance fee.

City beaches already have photography permit requirements in the tripple digits, as well as
insurace requirements in the million dollar category. The same thing can be expected to happen now at National
parks unless photographers unite and do something.

This basically walls out small and independent shooters from
even attempting anything entrepreneurial. (commentary: I guess only rich people can have their portraits taken at
the beach by rich photographers--so much for equality).

Images on Tribe

There have been a number of changes on Tribe, starting with the new Premium membership. AT this time, what that gets you is a start by your name, and no ads on your page. So Tribe loads faster, since it doesn't have to go get ads. The money from this feature has already had a positive effect on tribe, when the Image server crashed last week. Without the money they had generated, there would have been no money for another server as fast as they got the new one.

The management started several discussions regarding what features we as members would want from tribe. Some of the suggestions have been to design a better image interface, one that we could create different albums. Another suggestion would be to limit the number of images a member could post. The discussion were to put an upper limit on non-premium members, such as a limit of 300 images, and no limit on Premium members. AT THIS TIME, THERE ARE NO PLANS TO LIMIT IMAGE NUMBERS.

In one of the discussion I was a part of, another person stated she wanted a limit of 12 for non paying members. I replied I felt that 300 was a better number to be used. Her reasoning was that there are many people who randomly pirate images from the net, and unnecessarily use those images on their page. This is a valid subject for discussion. The number of images hosted by tribe uses up server space, and costs money to maintain. The balancing point is that there are many members who communicate with images. So a happy medium would be good to find. As members of a tribe that are keenly focussed on images (pun intended), what do we feel as being a reasonable number of images to have access to? Paid or unpaid? Or should there even be a difference between members who have paid for a premium membership and those who have not. many websites such a Flickr and Photo.net have paid memberships, and limits attached to those memberships. Tribe has implemented paid memberships already, so I want to try to stay away from that part of the discussion, and focus on what we as participants of this tribe feel Management should do. Thanks.

Hello Everyone,
My name is Lisa, and I have some questions regarding photography schools. I'm interested in pursuing a career in photography, and I was wondering if it really make a difference whether one goes to a school like Academy of Art or Brooks Institute compared to just getting a photography degree from a state school? Or can one learn enough from just going to workshops? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Lisa

Stephen Johnson to give free lecture at the School of Visual Arts NYC 12/4/2007

http://imagingbuffet.com/2007/11/29/stephen-johnson-to-give-free-lecture-at-the-school-of-visual-arts-nyc-1242007/

Stephen Johnson to give free lecture at the School of Visual Arts NYC 12/4/2007
The Master of Professional Studies Digital Photography department at the School of Visual Arts is hosting its first open to the public lecture on December 4, 2007 with renowned photographer, author, and educator Stephen Johnson. The lecture begins at 7:00 PM at the SVA Amphitheater, 209 East 23 Street, 3rd floor. The talk is sponsored by Canon’s Explorer of Light Program and is free and open to the public.

Before the lecture, the winners of the 2007 Real World Color Management Equipment Scholarship will be announced, and their winning prints will be shown. The scholarship is available to students enrolled in the Master of Professional Studies (MPS) in Digital Photography program at the School of Visual Arts (SVA). The scholarship is sponsored by Epson America and MPS faculty member and co-author of Real World Color Management, Chris Murphy. I’m also very honored to have been asked to judge the competition.
The lecture explores the state of digital photography today, from being a photographer in the 21st century, to cutting edge cameras and software techniques, to engaging discourse on the history and future of digital photography. Stephen Johnson has developed and spurred-on cutting-edge techniques for producing and reproducing images of the highest quality. This lecture is firmly based in his core belief that photography is fundamentally a light capture medium, rather than a pixel manipulation party.
Using his new book with O’Reilly Media: Stephen Johnson: On Digital Photography as his organizational structure for the talk, topics will include: making art, empowerment, ethics in the digital age, and some aspects of the digital darkroom. His lectures include very high quality digital image examples with which he can hone in on “uniquely digital” techniques and fundamental breakthroughs in photography that digital improvements have provided but which many have yet to realize. The talk includes a history of electronic imaging and details the transformation of the darkroom to the computer taking us all way up to the future trends in digital photography.
Stephen’s book and posters will also be available for sale and signing. I’ve had a number of opportunities to see Stephen Johnson’s pigment-based inkjet prints “up-close and personal” over the years and they are spectacular.
I look forward to seeing some of our readers there!
For more information about Stephen Johnson, visit his website here. For more information about this lecture, visit this page on SVA’s website, and for more information about the MPS in Digital Photography Program at SVA, visit this page.

too much cyan?

I asked a pro photographer I know to give me feedback on some of my shots. He said a bunch of my Velvia 50 shots had way too much cyan in them. Since it is not present in all of my Velvia 50 shots, he recommended I shoot a roll or two of test shots, using all of my lenses at different focal lengths, shutter speeds, and f-stops, and include various combinations of the filters I use. He also suggested that each shot includes a grey card and a macbeth color card. I'm not sure how many "angles" on my polarizer I should be testing (I was hoping for 2, min/max effect, but I have no idea if that is too few or too many angles to test). I don't know if I should bracket-shoot some or all of these test shots.

Since this was not a problem on all the shots of any roll, we are inclined to think it is not a problem with the way the film was developed, or with the scanner they used. (I'm pretty sure all of these shots were developed at The New Lab in SF.)

I've never done anything like this before.

Anybody got any pointers/suggestions on how I can do this in a reasonably efficient way?

What about things I should (or should not) worry about?

H

My Smugmug vs Zenfolio comparison-REVISED!!!

I have both a "pro-level" ($150) Smugmug account & an "unlimited" ($40) Zenfolio account. I did a little comparison over on another forum & have compiled much of those posts here for anyone curious about these two photo sharing services. Enjoy.

I have been with Smugmug over a year now. I signed up for the yearly "unlimited" Zenfolio account ($35 after referral code) almost a month ago after using the (no credit card) trial version for a few days. I started getting interested in it after really using it to browse other peoples galleries, so I wanted to give it a shot & do a real in depth review of the service, not just nose around the site for a bit & then write it off as a Smugmug copy cat (which it isn't) as some have. I wanted to really get my hands dirty & use it just as much as I do my Smugmug site, which means uploading all my content, doing captions, rearranging stuff, setting up different page layouts/styles, and all the other options. What did I find out?

Smugmug has more pro features but Zenfolio looks nicer & has better browsing. I love the way it automatically resizes the main photo to fit peoples browser window & how the thumbnails arent actual links. That means each time you click on a new thumbnail or page number in a gallery, your browsers page position stays put & doesnt make you scroll each time, which I find SUPER annoying in Smugmug. (Yes, I know people can use Lightbox in Smugmug, but it doesnt allow you the same freedom as this with choosing thumbnails & such). Both services offer unlimited uploads & downloads of original files. Bandwidth is unlimited too.

Zenfolio also allows users to make their breadcrumb as deep as they want, which I find to be very useful at times. Smugmug restricts the breadcrumb from going any deeper than 4 times. Everything looks nice & neat on the page in Zenfolio, I like the way you hover your mouse over things to get info such as exif/download links/photo & gallery links/etc instead of having all that info strewn all over the page, the slideshow rocks pretty hard, and my god is this site fast! Most of the time it goes just as fast as I can click, which has a lot to do with the way they prefetch the images. But, I cant tell you how good that feels when you are browsing a bunch of photos in a gallery & it goes that fast & doesnt make you scroll each time you view a new photo or page in a gallery. Its almost like viewing photos with a piece of software on your computer's hard drive! Yes, its THAT fast!!

But, like I said, Smugmug (as of now) has more pro features, more users, an awesome forum (dgrin.com) & great customer service. Although, I will say that everytime I have contacted Zenfolio support, they have replied within the same hour & were always extremely helpful & very nice too. What about prints? Smugmug all the way, no question. But, of course Zenfolio doesnt have a print service yet & they assure everyone its coming soon & will be a very robust system that will satisfy everyone, so we'll have to wait on that one to compare.

Smugmug lets you customize your page with your own html/css code, which can be a good thing or bad thing, depending on how you look at it. Zenfolio has pre-made templates (not just themes), which again can be a good thing or a bad thing. Depends on what you want to do with your page & how savy you are with coding, but I think its safe to say most people arent good with html/css nor do they want to be. But, overall, there is no denying Zenfolio is a VERY "Web 2.0" kind of setup & was built that way from the beginning.

How about user options? Well, thats a tough one. If I were comparing a pro-level Smugmug account to an unlimited Zenolio account, Smugmug would win because they have TONS of options for pros such as setting your own print prices, ability to upload short videos, watermarking, guest passwords for uploading, using your own custom domain name (more on this later), etc. However, if I were comparing Smugmug's other two accounts, Standard ($40) and Power ($60), to Zenfolio's Unlimited account ($40), in my opinion the Zenfolio account takes the cake & is a better deal.

But, back to options. How easy is it to change options with each service? Smugmug's are a little more spread out & you may find yourself looking in 4 different places within your account to accomplish something simple, like just setting up a new gallery with a sub-category, then choosing the options for that gallery in another location & finally adding photos to it. Its not hard, but its not what I would call intuitive either. Thats not the case with Zenfolio. In Zenfolio, literally ALL options, edits, captions, titles, keywords, gallery/group creation, access controls, deleting, descriptions, uploading, re-arranging, etc is done in ONE centralized location for your entire content. And I do mean everything!

This sounds like a bad idea at first because you would think thats too much info on one page, but its not like that at all & is actually very simple. You have a list of all your galleries/groups on the left & you just click on which ever one you want to make edits to, upload to (or whatever), then all the content appears inside the main area in the center with the options on the right. You can go deeper in your breadcrumb from there & make changes to any part of it. Then, you can view it as a guest would to see if its to your liking. They also allow descriptions to any part of your breadcrumb, not just galleries. I really like that a lot because sometimes I want to write little descriptions to a group that may contain a bunch of galleries within them with their own descriptions & so on.

How good do the actual photos themselves look on each site? You be the judge. Here: http://kerrybailey.smugmug.com/photos/60874868-567x850.jpg is a photo hosted on Smugmug. And here: http://www.zenfolio.com/img/p45366402-5.jpg is the same exact photo hosted on Zenfolio at the same size. I notice more noise on the Smugmug photo, especially around the polka dots on her dress going up towards her neck. Also, look into & around her eyes. Noise is more apparent there too in the Smugmug pic. The Zenfolio image just looks more pleasing to my eyes & those image artifacts arent as apparent as they are in the Smugmug photo. My vote goes to Zenfolio here.

So, for now, im keeping both accounts because I like different things about each service. Although, my Zenfolio site may get the pleasure of having my custom domain name point to it as soon as they get their CNAME switch in place (not just url forwarding), which they say is coming in the next week or two. So, for $40 a year, Zenfolio is an awesome deal for what you get & in my opinion, is a better deal than Smugmug's Standard ($40) & Power ($60) accounts.. If you simply must have every pro option imaginable & are good with html/css web design, a $150 Smugmug pro account is exactly what you're looking for.

I hope my little "review" helps. Feel free to browse around each of my sites to make up your own mind. Cheers...Kerry

I've got an opportunity to pick up a complete Sinar F package with a good lens, a bunch of film and stuff and a tripod.

Is it worth it at this point in history to work with 4x5 film? I had a 4x5 many years ago, and still recall the incredible quality of the images and the control over the image making. But, for example, this afternoon I did a photoshoot with a model and made probably 150 images. during the same period of time, with a 4x5 I would only have made perhaps a dozen, maybe two dozen. But each one would have been most carefully set up, exposure metered, composed, etc. Plus it would be costing somewhere on the order or 2 to 3 dollars per image for film and processing.

Plus, instead of hauling a tripod and a 20 pound camera kit around, I would have been hauling closer to 40 pounds of gear.

How many of you use, would like to use, or would not use a view camera?

What would be the best way (camera settings?) to take pictures of someone spinning fire at night (or dusk) to make it so the person is in focus, but trails from the fire still show up? I have some fire pictures on my profile that my mom and one of my friends took, but they are very blurry.

I didn't have any model releases with me at the time and I no brained and totally forgot to get her information. I need to contact her about using the photo in a project I am working on.

Hi,

We are Ad Astrea Press. We are sort of a poor relation to Harwood Information Technology Services. By Monday we will be up and running on HITX servers. (Goodbye Bravehost.) We will be offering writers and artists epublishing services including web design, encryption (our patented system) and promotion.

The Voices in Our Heads grew out of an artist's egroup I founded on Yahoo which simply refuses to die. I resurrected some of the characters from Igor's place. We are offering all of our contributers space on the Zine to showcase a drawing, story or poem with a link back to their site. If you are selling your own work on your own site, great. We will put the link on our Zine and on Igor's If you need a place to sell your work, we will provide you free space on Igor's Place. If you sell enough stuff we will even give you your own page. Or we will design a website for you and host it and manage it for you. (A list of fees are available.)

If you would like to get more involved with the project and meet other Igorians, we have left Yahoo (the fascists) and we can be found @
tribes.tribe.net/rogue_mammals

Thank you for your interest.

ILLEGAL ECHO/untitled echo

ILLEGAL ECHO /untitled echo

Direction and Performance: Isak Immanuel
Including contributions from Robert L. Terrell, Kanoko Nishi, and Odessa Chen

Illegal Echo / untitled echo finds its origin in an excavation of memory, personal and public, and how in this terrain we can find irrepressible connections in the present world of both movement and images. Integrating dance-theater with photojournalism, the work navigates the intersecting landscapes of peripheral identity, transience and the instability of both body and social standing. To dance a falling line of recall. The distances between myth, allusion, and concrete subject, the missing/searching, outsider/insider, and the internal markers to what is one’s said society or place of origin are dually explored through the medium of dance and visual theatre.

The work contains a diverse landscape of sound from the classical to the urban, from noise to silence, featuring vocalist/indy-musician Odessa Chen and classically trained pianist/new music advocate Kanoko Nishi combined with an assemblage of street/field recordings. It will also feature an image to image dialogue with veteran photojournalist Robert L. Terrell.

In part, this new work has been made from the research, distillation, and trace of a two month movement workshop and impromptu writing engaged with local homeless and formerly homeless individuals here in the SF Bay Area. An extension of this work will be exhibited in the lobby gallery space.

Floor of Sky Projects is supported in part by the Zellerbach family fund and is fiscally sponsored by 21 Grand.

``````
To MIFUNE
By Christy Funsch with K808 and Skorpio
Performed by Glenn Curtis, Leonore Deaton, Christy Funsch, Jennifer A. Minore, Phoenicia Pettyjohn, Noel Rokswel, Sarah Sass, and Skorpio
Inspired by the charismatic Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune (1920-1997), To Mifune tells the story of a cowgirl’s (Christy Funsch) journey to meet her samurai idol (Skorpio). The characters for this work are drawn from Mifune’s roles, as well as from roles in acclaimed Japanese film-maker Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo, Stray Dog, and The Seven Samurai. Funsch’s work examines how one’s individuality shifts through interactions with others: movement is borrowed, shared, exchanged, and exaggerated among all of the characters. The protagonist’s idea of who she is changes as her context changes, and by the time she meets the person she thought was her idol, she has come to appreciate the perhaps less grand---though certainly not less admirable---heroics of those she has met on her journey.
Hip-hop DJ K808 mixes live original beats with samples from both Kurosawa’s film Yojimbo and country singer Patsy Montana into a living sound score for the work. The result combine
