I have my choices narrowed down to a profession that will almost certainly be lucrative, if a bit boring, and the profession which actually excites me-photography. My husband, and others, are discouraging the choice of photography as one that is too uncertain. What are my chances of making a living as a professional photographer? Does it matter whether a person has a degree, or are you judge solely on your talent? Any info would be helpful!

Interesting article by a pro, discussing pro's & con's of different systems. I've x-posted this to a couple other relevant tribes.

Note that he's actually *used* all the stuff he talks about, not just "tested" it -- he doesn't seem to have any "brand loyalty" to speak of: he buys what helps him shoot in the way he wants to shoot (and therefore, his choices may not suit YOU in the way YOU want to shoot... ;-) . If he tries a new system and it helps him more than his old system, he moves to the new system. If it doesn't, he sticks with the old system.

Also, there's the caveat that (now we're shooting digital) cameras change really, REALLY fast; obsolescence (or at least, the frequent addition of new/desirable features) is a fact of life. So today's choices may be different tomorrow.

All of which he owns up-front. It's a good read, very interesting:

I was reading a post by a member of Tribe's staff, and it looks like she might have spilled the beans on a policy change that's about to happen. Quoting her post (link to said post follows)

>> if I have a tribe page, from my blog, some discussion or
>> my photo album, can I paste that URL into a normal email
>> frame, send it and the friend can open the link from there
>> or do they get directed to the tribe welcome page and asked
>> to become members first?

> It depends -- a page from your blog can be viewed if it's not
> marked "friends only"; photos, however, cannot be viewed by
> non-members. You can test this yourself by logging out and
> then attempting to view your link.

http://bugs.tribe.net/thread/2d460ad8-224a-4df0-8abf-4c949c016c65#d21b0f90-a546-4a6b-bd63-9553e74f6086

At present, of course, this is not the case, so why would an employee of Tribe, the woman who represents the company over on Getsatisfaction.com

http://getsatisfaction.com/tribe

and so presumably would be in the know about such things, make such a mistake when photos posted by members have always been visible to the general public, at least since I joined in 2007? She is, after all, an official company representative, the voice of Tribe, somebody who could hardly be expected to explain Tribe's actions without knowing what Tribe has done.

A simple, logical explanation for this discrepancy, that fits in with past performance: Tribe decided to change the settings on its site so that member photos would only be visible to those logged in, and then got overly optimistic about the timetable in which this change would occur. Carolyn, being the spokesperson, was told about the change. The development team then fell behind schedule, as they always seem to, with the result that Carolyn was left reporting a change before it occurred, but after it had been scheduled to take place, the sending of that notice to the spokesperson saying "Umm, Carolyn, we haven't done that yet, so don't tell people about it" also falling behind schedule.

Why would Tribe implement such a change? Shortsighted, bottom line greed - in the short run, doing so would cut Tribe's bandwidth consumption and expenses. In the long run, doing so would also cut deeply into the profits, because the site, having lost its visual appeal to the lurkers - the vast bulk of the visitors on any site - would see far fewer visits, reducing its ad revenue. But then, as you might have noticed, Tribe's management doesn't tend to think long term. So, what does one do?

Having been on the Internet for a good, long time, I'll start by saying what one doesn't do - one doesn't "wait and see". I've seen an endless stream of users wait until after a new policy was announced to start a campaign against it. In none of these cases have I ever seen management give ground, even as their refusal to do so has visibly sent their part of the company into a death spiral (eg. Yahoo 360). The reason is simple. For management to give in, after they've made a public announcement, is for management to lose face. Managers don't like to do that.

If the users begin the campaign before the announcement, however, management is left with what it needs - plausible deniability. Having backed off from the intended severely unpopular change, it can pretend that it never intended to make such a change, and as far as most of the world knows, they're telling the truth. The users get what they want, management gets what it wants, and nobody is seriously harmed in the exchange, as each defines harm for himself. So, what I'm hoping is that users will be bold enough to get paste the cliche and make themselves heard, soon.

We're looking at a very small change that we would seem to have had advance warning on, just through sheer dumb luck. Our window of opportunity would seem to be very narrow, indeed. I hope that we will not be so rigid in our responses, that we miss it.

Wonder if any of you can help me with a question about purchasing a digital camera.

It's for my girlfriend at her job. She is in PR. She wants a camera to be on site for various kinds of work that they do. It would be a kind of back-up to the work of the professional photographers that they work with.

They need some very very easy to operate and cheap. Like under $200 if possible.

Is there something in that range? Or is that too low to get anything that functions well? I don't think they can buy a used camera, unless it is from a camera store/ official dealer of some kind.

We agreed that if I ever sold any that I'd give her a cut of the profit. I haven't sold any but will honor that. However, in order to sell these photos I need a model release from her. She wants her share of the profit as part of the contract. I have no issue with this. But I can not find any stock model release forms on-line that have compensation written into them.

In consideration of members here, I'll only post this once. Not interested in spamming you guys. Here's the pitch...

I own a "matchmaking" service for photo buyers and photographers (www.stockphotorequest.com). Quite simply, I recruit photographers who pay me a yearly subscription fee which gives them access to my service.

How does StockPhotoRequest.com work?

As a subscriber, you receive emails with image requests from advertising and editorial Photo Buyers.

You can go to the site to upload images to one common light table per request. (Each uploaded image has links to your contact info next to it, so even if they don't use your image, you are advertising your work to your specific target market. You can see what other photographers are submitting as well and what the photo buyer has saved or deleted.)

Photo buyers contact you directly to license images. You pay NO commissions on sales.

You have your own Photographer Profile Page on the site, with a bio and portfolio of images. When we market our service to photo buyers we also market individual photographers.

Subscribers can upload, manage, and edit their personal images in our Searchable Image Collection (searchable by keywords you assign).

Photo buyers are able to search through images and license them directly from you. As with all your work at StockPhotoRequest.com, you keep 100% of your sales.

The standard annual subscription fee for individual photographers is $400.

That's it in a nutshell. Some of my registered buyers include: National Geographic Adventure Magazine, People Magazine, Islands Magazine, Orion Magazine, Backpacker magazine and many others. Presently I have 800+ buyers, and I'm recruiting new buyers all the time (they use my service for free).

Have a look at the site: www.stockphotorequest.com

You can also check out this SPR video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbAu1EvnG4s

I'm happy to answer any questions.

Thanks,
I'm currently working on a BDSM fetish fashion related project for Fall 2008. I'm a fine art photography major at the Academy of Art University and am people specific. I love working with new people and am always willing to hear suggestions and ideas. If you like my portfolio (flickr offers more examples of my older images as well as my B&W and traditional color and alternative photography) please get in contact with me. I shoot only film and can provide prints and digital media as compensation. I'm also up to doing trades in exchange if you have an idea in mind as well.

Political views: I believe in a political system that is based on and governed by principles of secularism and democracy. A government for the people by the people is not only stable but a prefered alternative to general anarchy.

Religious views: Although I was born Jewish, I am firmly of the opinion that all religions regardless of their origin are divine pathways that lead to an identical destination. It is our foremost duty and responsibility to inculcate these values in the next generation since they will grow up in stressful times.

About me
I am the founder and CEO of an Internet-based company called You Taking Action http://youtakingaction.com which grooms would-be entrepreneurs as they plan and make the transition to self-employment. A robust personal development and personal wellness program provides the backbone to this home business strategy. It is ideally suited to those individuals who are looking for genuine income potential in the online space.

Activities: When I am not conversing with budding entrepreneurs and tomorrow's business successes, I am usually busy reading, traveling or playing golf which I specially enjoy doing on weekends.

Interests: I am particularly interested in eastern religions and philosophy.

Music: I am game for a broad spectrum of music tastes including rock, classic country, hip hop and even classical music. World music and experimental music such as Buddha Bar also interest me greatly.

Tv shows/movies: I like movies from the WW I and WWII era. I also like to watch current favorites, especially the ones with a clearly defined plot and story line.

Cornell Capa, Photographer And ICP Founder, Dies At 90

May 23, 2008

By PDN Staff

Renowned photojournalist, former Magnum president, and International Center of Photography founder Cornell Capa died Friday morning at age 90.

Capa's death was announced by the ICP, which said he died at home peacefully after battling Parkinson's disease for several years.

Capa is remembered for coining the phrase "the concerned photographer," describing those who use their photography to contribute to humanity’s well-being. The idea has been an inspiration for countless photojournalists over the last five decades.

"He was an extraordinarily warm-hearted guy who made incredible opportunities for an enormous number of us," said ICP director Willis E. "Buzz" Hartshorn. "The humanism that he expressed towards photography was something that he really did bring into his daily life. And the sense of loyalty that he engendered in his staff was extraordinary and unique."

"I think the other thing about him is that he’s probably the last of a generation," Hartshorn added. "I don’t think it is possible to do anymore in this field what this man has accomplished."

Robert Pledge, a friend and the head of Contact Press Images, called Capa "monumental."

"The legacy of the ICP, what he did, is so tremendous, and totally changed the understanding and interest in photography in this country and beyond," Pledge said. "The history of every art form... is always shaped by incredible individuals, and in our field he's one of those rare, special, amazing people."

Capa was the younger brother of pioneering war photojournalist and Magnum founder Robert Capa, whose 1954 death shaped the younger Capa’s commitment to humanity-centered photography.

Born in Budapest in 1918, Cornell Capa moved to Paris to study medicine in 1936. By night, he worked in a commercial photo lab, developing and printing photographs shot by his brother, Henri Cartier-Bresson and David ‘Chim’ Seymour. The work convinced Capa that he could affect more people through photography than through medicine.

In 1937, Capa followed his mother to New York, where he soon began working in the darkroom of Life magazine. His first published story, shot at the 1939 Worlds Fair in New York, appeared in Picture Post. During World War II, Capa served in the Photo-Intelligence Unit of the U.S. Air Force. Afterwards, he became a staff photographer for Life, shooting notable personalities such as TV star Jack Paar, painter Grandma Moses and actor Clark Gable for the magazine’s covers.

Capa decided to remain at Life even after his brother, along with Seymour and Cartier-Bresson, formed the Magnum Photos cooperative in 1947. “One thing that Life and I agreed right from the start was that one war photographer was enough for my family,” he said later. “I was to be a photographer of peace.”

But Capa had a change of heart when his brother died in 1954 after stepping on a landmine while on assignment in Vietnam. Within weeks, he resigned from Life and joined Magnum, where morale was low after the sudden deaths of the elder Capa and Werner Bischof. As Capa explained in a cable to Magnum’s Paris office, “My decision to join is personal, firm and conditional. It is based fully on belief of importance of Magnum idea and loyalty to friends.”

When Seymour was killed while covering the Suez Crisis in 1956, Capa assumed the role as president of Magnum, a position he held until 1960.

Capa continued working as a full-time photographer until 1974, gravitating toward politics and social issues. “I have aimed to be a credible witness, one who cares about the world he inhabits,” Capa said of his work in the introduction to his self-titled 1992 book. “My aim has been to share my vision with the world.” He shot photo essays documenting the destruction of indigenous cultures in Latin America (the subject of three of his books, including Farewell to Eden), the elderly in the United States, mentally challenged children, the Six-Day War, Soviet culture, and various presidential campaigns.

One of Capa’s favorite subjects was President John F. Kennedy, whose 1960 campaign he covered for Life. Struck by the inspirational tone of President Kennedy’s 1961 inaugural address, Capa wanted to assemble what he called an “instant book” on the first hundred days of Kennedy’s presidency. For help, he enlisted eight Magnum photographers, including Elliott Erwitt, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Marc Riboud and Burt Glinn and several writers and historians. Capa covered the White House, where he struck up a rapport with First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, who later became an important supporter of the International Center of Photography. The resulting book, Let Us Begin, was published on day 110 and is often cited as the first topical book of photojournalism.

In 1966, Capa teamed up with Bischof’s widow, Rosellina Bischof, and Seymour’s sister, Eileen Schneiderman, to establish the International Fund for Concerned Photography. The Fund sought to keep alive the work of his brother, Bischof and Seymour by promoting what Capa called “concerned photography.” The fund sponsored its first traveling exhibit in 1967. Aptly titled “The Concerned Photographer,” it featured the work of Bischof, Robert Capa, Seymour, Leonard Freed, Andre Kertesz, and Dan Weiner.

Recognizing that the Fund needed its own gallery, Capa opened the International Center of Photography in New York 1974. Since its founding, ICP has hosted more than 500 exhibitions and displayed the work of more than 3,000 photographers.

“ICP was an outgrowth of Cornell’s determination to see that his brother would not be forgotten and so that became his cause, and it was very much a one-man institution to begin with,” Capa’s friend and Magnum colleague John G. Morris recalled earlier this year. “He had supporters, of course … but it was his determination and his taste that established ICP.”

The demands of running the ICP left Capa with no time for his own photography. “This I had not foreseen or planned,” Capa wrote in his self-titled 1992 book, but he added that he had no regrets about it.

Capa stepped down as ICP Director in 1994, and began devoting more time to publishing and exhibiting his work. In 2000, the ICP honored its Founding Director by inaugurating the Cornell Capa Infinity Award for Distinguished Achievement in Photography.

British photojournalist Don McCullin, who met Capa in Jerusalem in 1967, was the subject of an ICP exhibition in the 1980s and received ICP's Cornell Capa Award in 2006. "To have my name associated with the great name of Capa made me really thrilled," McCullin said.

"We wish we had a Cornell Capa on this side of the Atlantic, somebody who gave photography a kind of respect on a spiritual level," McCullin said.

Anthony Bannon, director of the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film in Rochester, N.Y., said Capa created a community and passed his concerns on to others.

"He lived 'concerned photography': through his extraordinary images, through Magnum, through the institution he created, and even more important, the community and culture embodied in the International Center of Photography," Bannon said.

Capa is pre-deceased by his wife of 61 years, Edith Capa, who died in 2001.

Funeral information

A private burial service will be held Wednesday, May 28. Capa will be burried at the Capa family grave site at Friends Cemetery in Amawalk, N.Y.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 10 at 10 a.m. at The Times Center, 242 West 41st Street between 7th & 8th Avenues in New York.

I found that putting it on sports it takes a faster shot. I know we are moving and the moon is moving so to have it focus automatically without it blurring is tricky so I'm told. I can get close, however it looks pixelated for lack of a better word I don't know. I've put it on night and it only takes a worse pictures and automatic forget it.
Anyone have any idea on how I can get a clear shot of the moon, without the blur, and with the pixels'?

It is making them well enough - but only with a white background....
Anyway to change this (can't find any preference for it...), to the more traditional looking 'contact sheet' with black background...??

I only have Photoshp CS....

Or anybody know of any free, downloadable programs that make good contact sheets (not to print, just for on screen)....??

Thanks all who respond...
